What is a domain name.

A domain name is a name needed to build a website. Every device has its own IP address to connect to the internet. An IP address consists only of numbers and characters and is difficult to find or remember. A domain name is therefore meant to link to an IP address, without having to remember the IP address itself. A domain name is thus intended to make a website easier to find and to provide easy access for visitors.

A domain name can be used for different purposes. For instance, you can use a domain name for a website or a blog , both business and personal. But a domain name can also be used for e-mail communication. This is mainly used for business communication.

A domain name is unique and contains a domain name and an extension. These are called labels and are separated by dots. The extension the short part at the end of the domain name. There are two types of extension, namely the country extension (e.g. .nl or .be) or a generic extension (e.g. .com or .net). You can choose the extension yourself. You can also obtain multiple extensions for your domain name.

The domain name needs to be registered. This is to ensure that the domain name does not already exist and also that no one can take it anymore. This is done by a database that contains all domain names. Each domain name is therefore unique. Registering a domain name costs money. The cost depends on several things, including the extension you choose. Often, when you buy a domain name, you can also choose a web hosting package or some other form of website maker.
